Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Moana who lived on Motunui Island. Moana loved the ocean and listening to her Gramma Tala’s stories about the trickster demigod who stole the heart of the mother island, Te Fiti.
But Moana’s dad, Chief Tui, thought the ocean was dangerous and forbid the islanders from sailing beyond the reef. That didn’t stop Moana from feeling a deep connection to the ocean and its creatures.
One day, the ocean gifted Moana a special necklace, which Gramma Tala believed was the heart of Te Fiti. When Moana turned sixteen, Gramma Tala revealed that she was a way-finder like her ancestors. She must journey across the ocean, find Maui, and restore the heart of Te Fiti to save the world.
Moana and Maui seemed like an unlikely pair, especially when Maui stole Moana’s boat. But as they worked together to retrieve Maui’s magic fishhook and defeat the wild coconut-clad bandits and monsters, Maui taught Moana how to way-find using the sun, the stars, the moon, and the ocean current.
Moana also discovered that she needed to be true to herself and trust her instincts, which helped her defeat the lava monster, Te Ka, and restore the heart of Te Fiti. Moana knew then that she was meant to be a daughter, a leader, and a way-finder.
Together, Moana and Maui saved the world and said their goodbyes. Maui transformed into a hawk and flew away, and Moana returned to her people. Moana’s amazing adventure shows that sometimes it takes courage and working with unlikely partners to make a difference in the world.
